Your supplier in China makes two nearly identical desk lamps. The launch video shows a wireless charging base, but the retailer also carries a model without one. A catalog result that contains a video still leaves the buyer with a basic question: does that demonstration apply to the lamp I am about to order?
Media availability is a separate acceptance check
Shopify's 28 October 2026 Fall Edition developer announcement describes Catalog API filters for products with 3D models or video, with links to the media. Its agent commerce documentation, checked on 5 November, separately describes fetching variant details for shopping actions. These are documented capabilities, not evidence that every shopping app displays the media, that a link matches the selected variant, or that video improves ranking.
Make the studio prove applicability shot by shot
Before filming, give the producer a short sheet with the claim, the approved SKU, the footage and the destination. Start with the two variants most likely to be confused, rather than the two that look most different.
| Shot | Production decision | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Shared operation | Film once if the mechanism and outcome apply to each named model. | Approved list of compatible SKUs. |
| Variant-specific claim | Commission a pickup or separate cut where the destination can show it accurately. | Model, included parts, and the relevant placement. |
| Unconfirmed sample | Hold the shot from public delivery until the production configuration is verified. | Owner and condition for approval. |
In the hypothetical lamp example, the hinge adjustment may work identically on both models. A phone charging on the base cannot serve as generic series footage. If the retailer only shows one video for the whole family, commission the common demonstration there and reserve the charging sequence for a confirmed compatible destination. A different export size will not fix the underlying claim.
Rehearse the handoff before accepting the package
Ask merchandising to select each model in the actual destination preview. Record which clip is returned or shown, which product configuration it depicts, and whether the channel can display a different clip for another variant. An API response containing a media link is not proof of playback. If you cannot verify the destination, label it unverified and avoid promising variant-specific display there.
Ask the production team to quote shared capture, variant pickups, assembly and destination checks separately. A replaceable end card may handle a wording change; a different included part or demonstrated result needs footage of the correct unit. Retain the approved claim-to-shot map alongside the source assets. When the factory revises an accessory, the next production brief can identify the affected shots without commissioning an entire catalogue again. The example illustrates an acceptance method, not a client result.
