A scan can be inexpensive to capture and still leave substantial work before a product is ready for marketing. Comparing capture alone with a complete modeling quote misses cleanup, missing geometry, material development and delivery for the intended use.
For international brands sourcing products from China, ONCE recommends separating the product into critical regions and intended views before choosing a method. The question is not whether a supplier can produce a model, but how it will complete the parts your customer will actually inspect.
Improvements do not remove every capture constraint
Apple’s Meet Object Capture for iOS, presented at WWDC23 and rechecked October 26, 2026, describes LiDAR-assisted improvements for low-texture objects while still advising against reflective, transparent and very thin structures. It recommends diffuse lighting to reduce highlights.
That describes a particular workflow introduced in 2023. It does not establish that every current scanner fails on glass. The narrower procurement lesson is that solving one difficult characteristic does not solve all of them.
One appliance can combine a matte body, a clear vessel and a thin metal handle. A single “scan suitable” label is too coarse to explain how all three will be completed. No device or sample was tested for this article, and no precision, success-rate or savings figure is assumed.
Make the pilot expose the unknown work
Imagine commissioning a rotating web model and close-up advertising shots of an appliance with a transparent container. A successful scan of its matte base demonstrates part of the workflow. It does not establish how the container edge, handle connection or underside will be made.
This hypothetical is not an ONCE project. Its implication is to choose a pilot region that is both commercially important and potentially difficult. A partial pilot is useful when its coverage and omissions are explicit.
Review it against the planned use. Will customers rotate underneath the product? Will the campaign move close to a joint? Must the vessel’s opening or wall thickness be represented? Not every asset needs every detail, but an all-angle promise should not be priced as a distant front view.
An exterior asset can have an agreed exterior scope. A cutaway animation needs separately authorized internal references; unseen mechanisms should not be invented and presented as product facts.
ONCE’s region-and-use matrix
For each critical region, record four items: the source of its shape, the treatment of unreliable or missing information, the intended views and outputs, and the approver. This is an ONCE proposed scoping method, not a tested cost model.
Sources might include checked capture data, authorized CAD, dimensions or product photographs. Preserve the distinctions. Artist reconstruction is not a measured result merely because it sits next to scanned geometry.
In the hypothetical appliance, the base could be evaluated for capture cleanup against the sample. The clear vessel might require additional references or separately scoped modeling if capture is insufficient. The thin handle and its connection deserve their own close-up review. An uncaptured underside must be acquired, reconstructed or excluded from the permitted use—not left unexplained in a freely rotatable web asset.
These are discussion examples, not fixed prescriptions by material. A mixed workflow is acceptable when the source and remaining responsibility of each region are clear. “Automatically generated” is not an acceptance result.
Separate geometry, appearance and the finished output
Custivo’s modeling service requests multi-directional photographs, dimensions and material notes, and distinguishes a delivered GLB model from a finished scene. It also directs some difficult materials toward its modeling service.
ONCE uses those descriptions of inputs and scope only. The provider’s broad claims about what phone scanning cannot capture are not adopted as universal technical facts. Its turnaround and performance promises are not used.
A useful model is not automatically the advertising scene the brand needs. Approve shape and proportion, material appearance, scene and camera work, and each intended output as distinct tasks. They may be purchased together, but the phrase “digital twin” should not silently substitute for their specification.
A web preview does not automatically approve an extreme campaign close-up. A polished render does not establish that the interactive web version has been checked. Review actual planned outputs rather than assuming every file performs identically everywhere.
If you need editable sources, separate components, future material changes or animation work, specify them before quoting. This is a scope issue, not a claim that a particular file format is inherently uneditable or that every supplier must deliver all project files for free.
Compare the remaining work, not the capture event
Ask each proposal to identify preparation, capture processing, missing-region reconstruction, material work, target delivery and agreed revisions. Where a pilot is needed to establish the scope, state the conditions and reassessment point rather than pretending the uncertainty is zero.
Any proposed surface treatment needs the product owner’s approval and risk review. This article gives no spray, cleaning or safety instructions. Even if treatment helps capture shape, the treated appearance should not automatically become the reference for the original finish. Preserve authorized original-state photographs and relevant notes.
With a China-based supply chain, also identify the model, sales version, dimension source and permission to share design information. Receiving a factory file does not itself establish authority to upload it to a third-party service.
For ONCE’s longer-term service design, the reusable asset is accompanied by an explanation of sources and downstream dependencies. That supports handover, not a guaranteed margin improvement. Reuse becomes valuable only when the next task, files and permissions actually exist.
Prepare a brief with critical regions, planned views, authorized references and outputs. Then ask how each difficult region will be completed. A good pilot reduces unknown work; it does more than produce an attractive turntable.
