Your store review says shoppers need a clearer product explanation. A replay shows a visitor leaving the product page, and the next proposal is a new video shoot with your production partner in China. Before approving it, establish who that visitor was and what the replay actually demonstrated.

When the visitor is an AI shopper, the recording is a simulated journey. It can help locate a question worth investigating. It does not turn every explanation beside that journey into a verified reason to commission more content.

What changed in SimGym

Shopify’s October 28, 2026 update introduced testing focuses for entire shopping journeys, product discovery and add-to-cart confidence. Recommendations can point to numbered page locations and link to AI shopper visit summaries and replays. That makes it possible to trace a recommendation back to a particular simulated experience.

The official help page also cautions that results may differ from actual customer behavior and that bot protection or traffic limits can leave journeys incomplete. Eligibility includes a Liquid storefront and other account and product conditions. These are capabilities and limitations, not evidence of a particular store’s improved conversion. ONCE’s three-column content work order

For each finding worth acting on, separate the record, the interpretation and the proposed work. Fill the gaps before issuing a broad “improve the video” brief.

ColumnRecordDo not substitute
ActionSimulation, page version, replay location and what the AI shopper didA claim that customers generally misunderstand the product
Explanation and open questionsThe model’s explanation and alternative causes requiring checksAn established cause inferred from the replay alone
Smallest change and acceptanceWhat to change, who owns it and how it will be checkedAn untestable instruction to improve the experience

Keep the “AI simulation” label in the archive and management presentation. A model-generated thought or explanation is not a quotation from an interviewed customer. Recording a simulated action accurately still does not make it a real purchase journey.

One finding can lead to several different services

Consider a hypothetical travel-accessory brand whose AI review reports uncertainty about what a packing set contains. This is not an ONCE client result or a SimGym test we performed.

Inspect the current page first. If the included items are correctly listed but difficult to find, the change may be information placement. If an approved contents photograph already exists but is absent from the page, the work is asset selection and implementation. If the underlying pack definition is missing, the product owner must confirm it before anyone illustrates it.

A new shoot becomes a concrete option when the explanation requires an unpacking sequence or physical relationship the existing assets do not show. Brief that missing action and the exact product version, rather than asking a crew to make the whole page “more convincing.”

Check access before diagnosing missing information

Shopify’s stated limitations give the technical owner a first question: did the AI shopper actually reach the intended page and step, under the intended theme version? An incomplete visit may reflect access conditions rather than failed storytelling.

Do not remove protective controls simply to satisfy a simulation. Have the technical owner identify the cause and an appropriate testing arrangement. Access problems, page organization and missing product facts need different owners.

Equally, the absence of a video action in a replay does not prove real people never watch it or that the tool fully understood every video component. The cited documentation does not guarantee coverage of every media element and storefront configuration. Check what was actually tested, and mark the unverified portion.

Accept the change at the level the evidence supports

First verify implementation: the intended information appears, product facts are correct, relevant desktop and mobile views work, and the change has not broken another function. Then, with inputs and versions recorded, use a diagnostic rerun to inspect whether the original simulated problem remains.

Actual customer understanding or commercial impact requires evidence suited to that claim. A better simulation is not a measured conversion lift. A live improvement cannot automatically be credited to the video if price, traffic, stock and other page elements also changed.

This does not mean commissioning a major research project for every small edit. A reversible information-placement change may start with factual and functional checks followed by observation of actual use. A costly shoot or a change to a central product promise warrants validation proportionate to the decision. Name what the acceptance process establishes.

Buy actionable findings rather than a polished score

A useful diagnostic deliverable includes the test goal and page version, replay location, original recommendation, human inspection, smallest proposed change, missing inputs, owner and validation arrangement. If access to a key step failed, report that gap instead of filling it with a confident conclusion.

Scope the services separately: diagnosis, adaptation of existing assets, page implementation, new content and review. A production crew should not have to solve a storefront-access issue; a theme edit should not be sold as proof of stronger product persuasion.

Over time, the valuable record is which inspected problem led to which implemented change and what happened next. That is more useful for repeat content work than accumulating screenshots and simulation scores alone. For broader planning, explore ONCE’s video marketing guides.

Five questions for the next review

  1. Which simulation, page version and replay segment produced this finding?
  2. Is the statement an AI action, a model explanation or our own hypothesis?
  3. Can approved information or existing assets resolve it?
  4. What is the smallest executable change, and who supplies and implements it?
  5. Will the next check establish implementation, simulated behavior or actual customer response?

The benefit of a more traceable AI replay is a more specific brief. It should help a brand choose the right work, including when a new production is unnecessary, while leaving genuine uncertainty visible.
