A marketing team uses an existing customer list to help LinkedIn find similar buyers, then commissions another batch of product videos after a promising lead report. Before scaling, it needs to establish what “new” means: a new contact, a new company, or a new customer relationship?

For overseas brands and industrial businesses working with China-based product or production teams, that distinction changes the next creative brief. An expansion message for an established account is not automatically the right introduction for an unfamiliar buyer.

A predictive audience does not certify new customers

LinkedIn’s current predictive audience guidance describes modeling based on source data. For company or contact list sources, it recommends excluding the seed list at the ad-set level if the advertiser does not want to target it. Choosing a learning source and choosing whom to exclude are separate decisions.

ONCE’s analysis goes one step further: an exclusion setting does not itself establish that every response is from a new customer. The completeness of the list, its coverage and the brand’s definition of a customer relationship still need checking. A new engineering contact at an existing purchasing account may be commercially valuable without being a new company.

This is an evergreen procurement issue supported by current documentation, not a claim that LinkedIn launched a new feature today.

ONCE’s source, exclusion and identity review

Use one review card for a defined acquisition task. This is ONCE’s working method, not a platform report. It does not require the production company to receive a complete CRM or identifiable customer list.

FieldQuestionAccountable team
SourceWhat relationships or behaviors inform the model, and why?Brand and media

Give the source a commercial rationale

A list of spare-parts purchasers, demonstration applicants and completed equipment buyers may describe different needs. Do not combine them merely to make a source large enough. Technical eligibility to create an audience and business relevance to the intended buying task are different checks.

Align exclusions with the intended relationship

If the goal is new companies, a list of known individual contacts may not express the whole requirement. Have the media owner verify supported controls, coverage and update arrangements in the actual account. If existing accounts should receive a new-product message, keep that as a deliberate expansion task rather than an unexplained component of acquisition reporting.

LinkedIn’s Matched Audiences guidance recommends separating prospects, current clients and churned customers, and excluding current customers from prospecting campaigns. Winning back an old account can be worthwhile; it should retain its own meaning in the review.

A hypothetical report that changes the next brief

Suppose twelve inquiries pass the same qualification standard. A subsequent review, using a company-level definition agreed before launch, identifies five from existing customer companies, four from companies with no previous business relationship and three unresolved identities. These are illustrative numbers, not ONCE customer results.

ClassificationAppropriate interpretation
Five from existing companiesInvestigate expansion or additional stakeholder needs
Four from new companiesFollow up as verified new-company leads, not completed customers
Three unresolvedResolve identity before including them in the new-company count

This classification does not estimate advertising incrementality or prove a video caused an inquiry. It establishes whether the reported result supports the acquisition task. Calling all twelve new customers could push the brand toward scaling creative that mainly works with people already familiar with it.

Buy the missing explanation rather than another generic batch

An introduction for an unfamiliar industrial buyer should establish the product category, suitable operating conditions and next evaluation step. An expansion message can address compatibility, upgrades or additional use cases, provided its assumptions about existing knowledge are justified.

For an illustrative packaging machine, the new-company edit might first explain what packaging task it performs, then show the operation. The existing-account edit might explain how it connects to equipment already purchased. Both can share accurate operational footage; separate objectives do not require two entirely separate shoots.

If relationship status cannot yet be distinguished, use an opening both audiences can understand. Avoid “as you already know” simply because an audience carries an AI targeting label. Commission pickup footage only when the review reveals an actual explanation or demonstration gap.

Before approving production, request a source-and-exclusion summary from the media team, a deduplicated relationship breakdown from sales and a missing-footage assessment from the production partner. An anonymized summary and a clear task definition will often support creative planning without passing personal customer data to a crew.

Build a reusable learning record

For a studio moving toward managed content services, the useful asset is a history connecting video versions, audience tasks and sales feedback. It is not ownership of the client’s contact database. Each review should distinguish list adjustments, unresolved identity and genuine content changes; only the last directly establishes a new production need.

This is an ONCE operating recommendation, not evidence of achieved margin gains. Brands can explore the video marketing collection for campaign planning and the production collection for turning a defined communication gap into deliverables.

Start with one product and one definition of a new customer relationship. Reconcile source, exclusions and identities before deciding which video treatment to scale.
