Your brand wants overseas buyers to find its product knowledge in AI answers, but does not want every use of that content treated as automatically acceptable. One supplier recommends blocking AI broadly. Another says visibility requires opening everything. Neither answer is useful until the provider, product, content and intended use are specified.
ONCE recommends separating training preferences, answer-time grounding and traditional search objectives before purchasing implementation. They are different questions, but available controls do not necessarily separate them in the same way.
The announcements have different scopes and clocks
Google’s October 30, 2026 announcement describes planned support in 2027 for a shared training-preference signal alongside existing controls. It remains a proposal undergoing standardization, rather than a universally operating standard today.
Google’s current crawler documentation says Google-Extended covers training and grounding for specified Gemini products, while not affecting Google Search inclusion or serving as a Search ranking signal. Preserving traditional search eligibility therefore does not establish eligibility across every Google AI product.
Microsoft’s October 30 announcement describes independent training and grounding preferences, beginning to take effect on crawl from February 1, 2027. Sites using NoArchive or NoCache need to examine transition arrangements before March 1, 2027. Those future arrangements are not a verified November deployment state.
The procurement implication is simple: one provider’s settings are not another provider’s promise, and announced support is not completed implementation. This article was checked November 4 and makes no changes to a website.
Write the business objective before choosing the setting
A brand might want public product knowledge to be discoverable, want it eligible to inform generated answers, and want to restrict particular training uses. Those objectives can be requested together. A supplier should explain which combinations the specified product supports and what trade-offs remain.
Do not let a ready-made configuration determine the objective after the fact. Equally, eligibility is not an observed citation, click or qualified inquiry. Content accuracy and usefulness still need their own work.
The ONCE control card
Use one card for each proposed change. This is a purchasing method, not a search-engine certification standard.
| Field | Question the supplier must answer |
|---|---|
| Provider and product | Which search surface, Gemini product or Microsoft experience is in scope? “AI” is not specific enough. |
| Content and intended use | Which pages, paths and versions are involved? Is the decision about training, grounding or crawl access? |
| Current support and timing | Is the control operating now or announced for later? What discovery and verification steps remain after deployment? |
| Accepted trade-off | If a control affects several uses together, has the brand accepted that consequence? |
| Implementation and review | Who approves and deploys it, which previous version is retained, how is it checked, and when is official guidance reviewed again? |
Record unknowns explicitly. An untested product should not be marked supported, and an absence of observed citations should not be marked proof of successful restriction. Writing a configuration, a system discovering it, and a visible outcome are different verification tasks.
A public installation guide is a workable starting point
Consider a fictional appliance brand sourcing content production in China. It has an approved English installation guide, wants overseas buyers to understand the product, and wishes to restrict certain training uses. This is a planning example, not an ONCE implementation or result.
The brand first identifies the page version and intended uses. The web specialist then explains the available choices for each relevant provider. Where a product supports independent choices, document them. Where its control combines relevant uses, explain the trade-off rather than promising compatibility everywhere.
Leaving a particular setting unchanged can be a reasoned decision. Record why: awaiting supported functionality, checking existing rules, or accepting the present scope. A bulk configuration change should not be necessary merely to produce an optimization report.
The content team has a separate task: verify that the guide matches the current model, that the film and text agree, and that important conditions are understandable. Content controls do not repair obsolete instructions, and a new film does not replace technical scoping.
Price three tasks and accept them separately
Use decisions: inventory pages, clarify business objectives and complete the provider-specific cards. The deliverable is a reviewable choice, not just a list of bots.
Technical implementation: deploy the approved scope, preserve change and rollback records, and inspect the actual output. This belongs with the authorized website team. There is no universal configuration snippet in this article.
Content and observation: maintain accurate public material and observe outcomes under agreed questions, platforms, dates and sampling conditions. Monitoring should not be sold as guaranteed AI inclusion. Nor should one unpredictable answer be the sole acceptance test for configuration work.
A combined proposal should say whether it covers both language sites, page-specific settings, future official changes and continuing maintenance. Avoid duplicate charges for included work. A small assessment for one page may be more appropriate than a recurring service when the ongoing workload has not been established.
Content assets need understandable use arrangements
As ONCE develops from production projects toward managed content services, useful records connect approved media, public pages, versions, customer choices and maintenance responsibilities. That can help web, production and marketing teams work together without pretending that a production company controls an AI platform.
The value lies in reducing confusion, keeping information accurate and explaining change. Any gain in qualified inquiries, retention or margin still needs operating evidence; platform announcements do not establish it.
For an overseas team coordinating Chinese production partners, start with one real page and one control card. Specify the product, intended use, current support, timing and accepted consequence before expanding either deployment or content spend. See ONCE’s video marketing articles for related content-planning work.
