Your holiday gift-card campaign has collected payments, yet the merchandise sales chart looks quiet. Weeks later, recipients place orders and another report counts their full baskets as campaign results. Adding those figures can make one promotion appear more productive than the money it actually brought in.
For overseas brands working with China-based content teams, the production brief should distinguish buying a gift from choosing products with that gift. ONCE recommends reporting those stages together while keeping their measures separate.
What Shopify’s reporting actually describes
Checked November 1, 2026, Shopify’s Sales reports documentation says gift-card product sales sit outside ordinary sales reports and the home total-sales figure. They appear in gift-card finance reporting; payments received appear in payment reporting. When the card buys merchandise, the full item value enters sales reporting, with the card-funded portion recorded as its payment method.
The official gift-card discount guide distinguishes the price paid for a card from its redeemable face value. A discounted purchase price does not itself reduce that face value.
These are platform definitions, not evidence of incremental demand or a universal accounting treatment. This article addresses marketing review; the brand’s finance team should confirm its actual accounting, taxes and balance treatment.
One card, two actions, different totals
This original hypothetical follows one purchased card in one currency. Assume successful payments, no tax, shipping, fees, refunds or other discounts, and no promotional cards mixed into the example. It is not client data.
| Action | New external payment | Card balance movement | Merchandise order value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays 90 for a card worth 100 | 90 | +100 | 0 |
| Recipient buys 125 of merchandise, using 100 on the card and paying 25 extra | 25 | −100 | 125 |
| Total | 115 | Closing balance 0 | 125 |
New external payments total 90 + 25 = 115. Merchandise order value is 125. Adding the card purchase payment of 90 to the merchandise order of 125 produces 215, but does not establish 215 of new payments: prepaid value appears in both stages.
The extra 25 is a redemption top-up, not automatically incremental spending caused by advertising. The recipient might have purchased anyway. Nor is 125 profit; product, fulfillment, acquisition and other costs have not been deducted.
ONCE’s four-column review
This is a proposed operating method, not a Shopify attribution feature. Define the campaign cohort, currency and observation cutoff first.
| Column | Question answered | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Card purchase payments | What buyers actually paid for this cohort | Redeemed merchandise value or profit |
| Linked merchandise orders | Order value reliably associated with those cards | A value to add directly to card purchase payments as one revenue result |
| Redemption top-ups | Additional payments on those orders, separate from card funding | Advertising incrementality |
| Unused balance | Face value remaining at the cutoff | Failed orders or immediate profit |
If only storewide aggregates are available, state the matching gap. Do not attribute all redemptions to the current video campaign merely to complete the table. Store observations and matched campaign results should remain distinct.
Separate purchased cards from cards the brand issued
Shopify’s Finance reports guide describes issue-method filtering for purchased, issued and app-generated cards, while aggregated finance reports do not split balances by issue method. It also explains that exports and card-sales reports can differ because of creation dates, order dates and card sources.
A purchased card and a compensation card with equal face value need different source labels. Authorized data owners should handle matching. A production partner generally needs de-identified summaries, not full redemption codes or personal payment records.
Two video jobs within one campaign
The purchase stage helps a buyer decide who the gift is for and why the brand offers a useful choice. Attractive wrapping alone may leave that reason unanswered.
The redemption stage helps the recipient select a product, understand fit and use, and complete the actual purchase. Product demonstrations may be reusable, but the argument should change from giving a gift to making a personal choice.
This is a content-planning recommendation, not a performance guarantee. Weak card purchases call for examining the buyer, offer and purchase page. Purchases followed by few linked redemptions call first for checking observation time, matching coverage, stock and the redemption path. A quiet merchandise-sales chart immediately after launch is insufficient reason to declare the gift-purchase video a failure.
Commission deliverables against the stage
Separate the gifting film, product-selection cutdowns, price-free demonstrations and editable campaign copy in the scope. Confirm the real pages and purchase flow before filming, so narration does not promise an unavailable redemption method.
Ask reporting partners to name the numerator behind any ROAS figure. Card purchase payments, merchandise orders and top-ups cannot be compared interchangeably. These records describe business activity; causal lift requires a separate, suitable comparison and observation design.
A production engagement can be judged on accurate, usable assets for the agreed stages and on useful questions for the next iteration. Budget expansion still needs the brand’s actual cost and supply information.
The durable asset is the connection between stages
For ONCE’s managed-content model, retain campaign cohorts, creative versions, intended stages, metric definitions and observation cutoffs. Product demonstrations can remain useful after holiday messaging expires, while recipients may redeem later.
Maintaining those relationships has a cost. No improvement in margins or conversion is claimed here. A practical first step is to follow one authorized, de-identified purchase through redemption, top-up and closing balance before commissioning another round of assets.
