Case overview · OVERVIEW

ONCE VISUAL traces changing Chinese fashion through a lateral sequence of period settings, costumes and objects, linking each scene through movement.

Changing styles of Chinese clothing unfold through a lateral sequence of period settings. Costumes, a gramophone, a sewing machine and a bicycle help each scene suggest a different moment in everyday life. ONCE VISUAL handled the planning, filming and production.

Let the camera movement connect the periods

The film's sideways progression provides a consistent direction of travel. As one setting gives way to the next, changes in clothing and props reveal the shift in period without requiring a complete reset of the viewing rhythm.

Each staged space gives the costume something to belong to. Furniture, objects and character movement help the clothing read as part of lived culture, while transitions maintain the sense of a continuous journey.

Coordinate the image across changing scenes

The production depends on the relationship between scenic design, costume, blocking and camera movement. Repeated direction gives the sequence unity, while each new arrangement introduces enough difference to make the passage through time visible.
