A launch team commissions a CGI film from its production partner in China. The ecommerce team then asks for “the same model” for an interactive product page. Before treating that as a simple extra export, establish what the order actually includes: an editable production asset, a web-ready model, or only a rendered video. Those are different deliverables.

ONCE recommends sharing the approved product foundation while scoping each application and its publication separately. A reusable asset is valuable when the next team can identify what remains valid, what needs work and who will deliver the updated result—not simply because a 3D file exists.

A marketing direction, not proof of automatic savings

In its January 13, 2026 announcement, Maxon previewed Digital Twin, describing a workflow from cleared CAD or 3D inputs to multichannel marketing visuals. The announcement called the application upcoming and in development. It establishes the direction Maxon described at that date, not current availability or an industry-wide productivity result.

The storefront has a separate practical boundary. Shopify’s Product media types documentation lists GLB and USDZ support and requires a compatible theme for the relevant media. Its model-creation guidance calls for real-world scale, reference matching and suitable format/device previews. Both documents were checked on October 21, 2026.

Our inference is a procurement one: keep a consistent product foundation without assuming one production file is the finished answer for every channel. Platform format support is not acceptance of your actual storefront implementation.

The ONCE three-layer order

Separate the commission into a product master, application versions and the page itself. “Master” here means the agreed marketing production asset; it does not require the manufacturer to release its complete engineering CAD.

LayerSpecify the purchaseDo not assume
Product masterApproved public geometry, agreed appearance, product revision reference, editable scope and dependenciesEvery concealed component, unrestricted third-party rights or free future redesigns
Application versionFilm shots and renders, or an optimized interactive model, with its own output and editing scopeA rendered film is an interactive model; a web export preserves every production-rendering effect
Published pageDeployment for the correct product, theme and agreed device conditions, display checks and a fallback imageSupplying a model includes store development or guarantees the browsing experience

A film controls the camera and what the audience sees. An interactive page lets the customer change the view, and must work within its actual display and loading conditions. The applications can share approved shape and dimensions while needing different material treatment, detail choices and delivery work.

For an immediate film with no confirmed follow-on use, a one-off rendering commission can be a sensible purchase. Do not buy an interactive implementation or a large asset library solely to acquire the “digital twin” label.

Follow one product change through the system

Consider a hypothetical folding desk lamp—not an ONCE client project. The brand wants an animated folding demonstration and a model customers can rotate on its product page.

Agree the product revision first. The film team develops motion and lighting from the approved appearance; the web team prepares its display version. The engineering owner decides what may be exposed. A marketing need for an exterior view is not permission to publish hidden construction data.

Now add another finish. If the shape is unchanged, review whether the approved foundation can be retained, then update and approve the film and web versions. “A color change” still may require material work, rendering, export and publication. Reuse does not make those tasks disappear.

Next, suppose the factory changes the hinge housing. That is no longer just a surface adjustment. The product owner identifies the changed revision; production assesses affected models and shots; the storefront owner replaces the appropriate asset. The brand also decides what happens to any active advertisement showing the previous housing.

Keep a compact relationship record: product revision, derived campaign files, live page version and the owner of each update. An archive full of editable projects is not yet a usable asset system if nobody can connect those projects to content currently in market.

Compare incremental investment, not an invented saving rate

Use a simple question: does the extra upfront investment in a reusable master, plus its future maintenance and handover cost, come to less than the repeated construction work it can avoid in confirmed future projects?

Populate that comparison with scoped quotations. Keep film adaptation, web optimization and deployment costs wherever they still occur in either route. Do not count every future deliverable as work eliminated by reuse. Put possible channels and unapproved product variants in a separate scenario, not in the committed return.

Ask for comparable options using the same product information: the current film only; the additional investment for an agreed editable master; the interactive version and page work; and pricing logic for a finish change versus a structural revision. This reveals what flexibility the asset investment actually buys.

Also establish who can edit the asset, which software or licenses are needed, what is archived and what a successor supplier receives. Paying for production does not answer those questions automatically. An ongoing production service should price identifiable update work, not an open-ended promise that everything will remain reusable.

Start with two real uses

For a team working across an overseas marketing department and a Chinese manufacturer, the useful first brief is small: the film required now, the next confirmed use, approved product references, release boundaries and a named product-revision owner. If there is no second use yet, keep the initial investment proportionate.

The ONCE 3D product animation service outlines model preparation, appearance development, motion and deliverables. Bring the desired editable scope and actual reuse plan to that discussion. Storefront implementation and subsequent maintenance need separately agreed responsibilities and pricing; do not hide them inside “make a digital twin.”

The practical asset is not the biggest collection of files. It is the ability to resume production from a trustworthy product version when the next real requirement arrives.

The three-layer order, cost comparison and lamp illustration are ONCE’s proposed decision method, not a report of measured customer savings or conversion improvement. The original AI-generated cover is a conceptual illustration, not a client product or production photograph.
